Suspension (NRN: 04-0211): When prepared as directed each 5 mL (teaspoonful) contains Ampicillin Trihydrate BP equivalent to 125 mg Ampicillin.

Pack Size: Bottle of 100 mL.

Pharmacology

Ampicillin is a semisynthetic compound derived from 6-Amino-penicillanic acid. it has bactericidal action against Gram positive micro organisms of Streptococcus pneumoniae and other Streptococci, Enterococcus faecalis, it also has bactericidal action against Gram negative bacilli including some strain of Bordetella pertusis, Haemophillus influenza and some Enterobacteriaceae, such as E coli, Proteus mirabillis, Salmonella and Shigella sp.

Ampicillin having an amino group attached to the basic Penicillin structure enables the drug penetrate the outer membrane of the micro organism.

Indications

Ampicillin is used in the treatment of a variety of infections due to susceptible organisms including Respiratory Tract infection, Urinary Tract infection, Gonorrhea, enteric infection, Meningitis and Septicaemia.

It is also useful in the treatment of Enteric fever, infection of the billiary tract, ear, nose, throat and soft tissue.

Susceptibility test should be carried out before initiating treatment to guard against resistance to the antibiotic caused by some beta-lactamase producing organisms.

Contra-indications

The use of Ampicillin is contra-indicated in cases of hypersensitivity to ampicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.

Precautions/Warnings

To be used strictly under medical supervision in pregnancy.

Reduce dosage in case of renal impairement.

Interactions

Interactions with other Medicines

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. Interactions with Food/Tobacco/Alcohol

Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco.

Adverse Effects

Nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion and rashes could occur.

Dosage & Administration

Preparation: Add 74 mL previously boiled and cooled water. Shake to obtain Suspension and use within one week of preparation
